TPT to Altrincham

Walk 9 . 2:12

The Walk

Join the TPT at Mill Lane. Parking can be a bit of a challenge around this area – but you can usually leave your car for an hour or two at the Green Dragon pub (if you have been a customer first!)

Trans Pennine Trail from Heatley to Altrincham

A 3 and a half mile walk or cycle along the Trans Pennine Trail (TPT)

Our starting point for today’s walk is at the entrance to the trail at the Mill Lane crossing.

On your right, you’ll see a rather grand-looking mansion which was built in recent times. At one time, this was the site of The Railway Hotel, a much-loved pub which closed its doors in 2007 – and though empty for many years, mysteriously burnt down in November 2011.

Walk through the kissing gate and you’ll see a disused brick building on your left. This privately-owned building is what remains of Heatley & Warburton Railway Station which opened in 1853.

On the right, sectioned off you’ll see the former goods yard and sidings – but the tracks have long gone.

The Warrington & Stockport Railway

The Warrington and Stockport Railway line (later the London and North Western Railway) closed for passenger services in 1962, but goods-trains still operated on the line until 1985.

This stretch now forms part of the Transpennine Trail, a 345 mile track which runs from Southport to Hull.

It’s popular with walkers – but also cyclists and horses too.

You’ll have a lovely walk through the countryside – it’s a straight track all the way to Altrincham, though after about a mile you’ll come to a pathway on your left. This is part of the Mersey Valley Way and it will lead you back towards Warburton, through farmland.

Seamon’s Moss Bridge

Continue along to Altrincham though and you’ll eventually arrive at a small car park, and the grade 2 listed Seamon’s Moss Bridge.

After a rest here, you can either retrace your steps on the TPT or join the towpath back towards Lymm.
