This walk starts from the car park at Sow Brook playing fields. It’s an easy 15 minute walk each way.
Most people know that the Bridgewater Canal runs right through the centre of the village – but many are unaware that the Manchester Ship Canal also skirts the village – and it is perfectly possible to get to the waters edge!
There is a moderately challenging walk you can do to Thelwall from near Statham Pools. It takes about an hour and a half each way – but today, we are taking you on a short walk from Sow Brook.
With your back to the changing room cabin – and with the allotments to your right, head towards the top left of the playing field.
You’ll soon come to a bridge which passes over Sow Brook. Continue over the bridge and follow the path. You’ll once again be heading to the top right of the crop field.
You’ll not be able to be able to see the canal until you are right upon it – so keep going!
You’ll eventually arrive at a small corner – where Sow Brook enters the Canal. It’s perhaps not the most spectacular view – but it’s a peaceful spot and you may be lucky to see a sea-going ship sail past!
Well worth a visit!
