The Walk

Park up in the small car park (free) on Statham Avenue just by the Ranger Cabin. There’s usually a coffee van here – so get your supplies before you head off as there’s no other options along the way!

Latchford offers a range of places for coffee or lunch. If you don’t fancy walking back, the CAT 5 bus runs frequently (daytime) back to Lymm!

Lymm to Latchford Locks

Along the Trans Pennine Trail (TPT)

The starting point for this walk is the car park & ranger cabin on Statham Avenue. This was once the site of Lymm Railway Station, part of the Warrington Stockport Railway, which closed to passengers in September 1962.

The line was still used for freight services until 1985, with as many as 60 trains passing through Lymm until the line closed for good.

The line was eventually lifted in July 1988.

Though there is no trace of the platform today, the station house (now a private home) remains and a tiny section of the footbridge can still be seen.

This five-mile walk will take you on a fairly straight path all the way to Latchford Locks. It’s easy walking – though at the time of writing this article, the first section of the TPT is closed due to resurfacing. We’ll update this page as soon as we can, but for now – follow the diversion.

You’ll rejoin the TPT at Camsley Lane, with the M6 viaduct above you.

From here, the road will take you on a fairly straight path all the way to Grappenhall and beyond to Latchford Locks.

From here, you can also see the Latchford Railway Viaduct which was built in 1893.

Sadly, in 1985 it was deemed too expensive to carry out the expensive repairs needed on the bridge – resulting in the complete closure of the Warrington Stockport Railway line.
