An easy 1 1/2 hour walk from Spud Wood to Little Bollington along the tow path
Park up at Spud Wood car park, take a left turn onto the towpath for a lovely stroll along the canal. There’s the reward of a pub at the end (The Swan With Two Nicks – food and drink, open for food 12 – 8 daily) – so what’s not to like?
A Historical Marvel
The starting point for this walk is Grantham’s Bridge, a grade 2 listed arched built around 1770.
Take a left on the towpath – you’ll soon see Burford Lane Warehouse on your right. This is believed to be the last remaining canal office / warehouse along the Bridgewater – and it was once used as a hospital for weary horses!
Agden Bridge
After a mile or so, you’ll come to Agden Bridge and a very welcome bench where you can take a rest for a while.
Look over to the other side of the canal and you’ll see some old lifting gear and a wonderful example of early Victorian iron casting.
It’s a casing for the water supply on the dock. You may have spotted this many times – but may not have realised how old it is, or that it is grade 2 listed!
From here, you can retrace your steps – have a walk over the bridge (it has quite a hump!) or walk along the lane back towards Spud Wood.
