A walk along country lanes and back via the Bridgewater Canal
Here’s a nice two hour walk along quiet country lanes and back along the Bridgewater Canal.
The starting point is the crossroads by the Burford Lane Aquaduct (park at Spud Wood).
Though not officially known as “Caution Corner”, there is a period home at this junction known as Caution Cottage.
With the car park behind you and the aquaduct on the right – you want to head straight on, along Bradshaw Lane.
Though you may come across the odd car or tractor, it’s a very quiet lane which snakes along in the lovely countryside and farmland.
You’ll eventually come to a junction – with Wet Gate Lane to your left.
If you prefer, you can take this lane and walk back towards the main road (Mill Lane) and take a left back to the car park. Or, you could take the public footpath through the field ahead and pass by Heatley Mere (though the Mere is currently closed off to the public).
But for this walk, we’re going to continue straight on, along Spring Lane.
As you continue, you’ll pass Shepherds Pool on your right.
This little-known pool is owned by Altrincham Anglers and was created by the club in 1997. Though only accesible to members, it is a pleasant spot and is now a thriving habitat.
As you walk this route, you’ll have the opportunity to say hello to a few horses along the way – even some friendly cows from time to time!
Eventually, the road bends to the right and you’ll notice a cute farmer’s cottage on the corner. Continue along, heading to the Bridgewater Canal.
On your left is a dary farm. There is a public right of way (over the cattle bridge) through the farm – and if you fancy an extended walk through farmland (moderately challenging) as far as the Bollington Aquaduct, you can do that from here.
Otherwise continue, and you’ll eventually reach Agden Bridge at the Bridgewater Canal.
There’s a welcome bench here – so you can take a rest for a little while!
From here, walk back along the towpath towards Lymm and the Spud Wood car park.
