Alongside the M56 to High Legh

Off the beaten track

Now here’s a walk with a difference – a largely unknown public footpath which runs by the side of the M56 Motorway from Agden Lane to Limetree Lane in High Legh.

This is a two-hour round trip walk with a remote starting point – there’s no parking available nearby – but you could park up on Agden Park Lane (just opposite the Wheatsheaf Pub on the A56) and walk along the road to the left until you come to the motorway bridge.

There’s no footpath, but it’s a wide road and not too busy.

As you reach the bridge, you’ll notice a tiny public footpath sign on the right hand side of the road. Follow this track and you’ll soon be right alonside the M56!

This isn’t the quietest of walks, but certainly one you should experience at some point!

Eventually, the footpath comes to an end and at this point you have reached Limetree Lane.

From here, you can turn back the way you came – or you can continue walking along Limetree Lane and at the junction, turn right onto Peacock Lane and head straight to West Lane, the main road.

Just be aware that this is a busy country lane and there’s no pathway.

Abbey Leys Farm

As you walk along Peacock Lane, you’ll see a driveway into Abbey Leys Farm. There’s a farm shop here, open most days until around 5pm.

As you reach the main road, take a right and you’ll eventually come to the Broomedge crossroads with the Jolly Thresher Pub just ahead of you.

Take a right here and you’ll soon come to Agden Park Lane where you left your car.
